Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) slammed Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration during an interview with The Daily Wire this week, saying that the sanctions that Biden was wanting to put on Russia were nothing more than a “slap on the wrist.”

The remarks from Tuberville come as Russian President Vladimir Putin has amassed approximately 190,000 troops near the Ukraine border for what many experts say is an imminent invasion.

“The sanctions that they want to put on [Russia] are nothing, it’s kind of like a slap on the wrist,” Tuberville said. “We’ve come up with sanctions on the Republican side that are real strong, pre and post, if they come in. So, I think it’s a huge mistake that we haven’t put some sanctions on at the beginning, said, ‘Hey, this is the start. This is how it’s gonna work. And if you think about going in, then they’re gonna get much worse.’ They need to feel that.”

Tuberville mentioned the importance of going after insurance companies with sanctions if they try to insure the Nord Stream 2 pipeline because that would help to keep it offline, which would be devastating to Russia’s economy.

The senator added that regional entities had more responsibility for what was going on than the U.S. did, and that China is what the U.S. needed to be focused on.

“We know that NATO and the European Union, this is much more their responsibility — it’s really not ours. We are in NATO,” he continued. “But at the end of the day, you know, we just got out of a war; we don’t want in another war. Plus, we know our number one adversary doesn’t just want a little power like Russia, China wants to rule the world. So, our focus needs to be more on that.”
