Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, raising tensions with the West. Putin also urged Russian lawmakers to sign treaties with Ukraine’s rebel regions, enabling Moscow’s military support for them.

The leaders of the separatists republics of Donetsk and Luhansk of eastern Ukraine asked Putin to recognize the independence of their territories in a video address aired on Russian state TV.

Putin: “We need to discuss Donetsk independence today. Our Western colleagues are not ready to accept our central proposal: not to expand NATO eastward.”
