Hassan Rouhani says US can impose neither negotiations nor war on Iran

Iran`s president told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that the United States could impose "neither negotiations nor war" on the Islamic Republic amid heightened tension between the longtime foes over Tehran`s 2015 nuclear deal with major powers.

"Iran is not a bargaining chip in US elections and domestic policy ... Any US administration after the upcoming (US) elections will have no choice but to surrender to the resilience of the Iranian nation," Hassan Rouhani told the annual UN gathering in a video message.

The US-Iranian confrontation has intensified since 2018 when President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers and unilaterally reimposed sanctions that have hobbled the Islamic Republic’s economy. Trump wants a broader agreement with Tehran`s clerical rulers that would further restrict Iran’s nuclear programme, halt its ballistic missile development work and end its support for proxy forces around the Middle East.

Iran has refused to hold talks with the United States unless Washington lifts sanctions on Tehran and returns to the original agreement. In retaliation for US pressure, Tehran has scaled back compliance with nuclear capacity limits set by the deal. In his UN address earlier on Tuesday, Trump said: "We withdrew from the terrible Iran nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions on the world’s leading state sponsor of terror". Iran denies supporting terrorism.

The Trump administration on Monday slapped new sanctions on Iran to support the US assertion that all United Nations sanctions against Tehran that were lifted under the 2015 agreement are now reinstated. That move was rejected by key European allies as well as US adversaries such as Russia and China who are all parties to the nuclear accord.

"This is a victory not just for Iran, but for the global community - during the transitional international order in the post-Western world - that an aspirant to hegemony is humiliated in such self-created isolation," Rouhani said, referring to the Trump administration. In his address to the General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron said the Trump`s administration`s "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran had so far failed. Macron dismissed US efforts to restore UN sanctions against Tehran as Washington had already left the nuclear deal.

The coronavirus pandemic killed 833 French people in just 24 hours, making it the nation’s deadliest day since the global outbreak started in China and quickly spread to the rest of the world. Health Minister Olivier Véran warned Monday that despite the tragic figure, France has still not yet seen the worst of the virus, BBC News reported. “We have not reached the end of the ascent of this epidemic,” he said. “We must keep up our efforts as citizens by staying at home." The total number of cases, combining hospital and nursing home statistics, increased by 5,171 between Sunday and Monday to 98,010.
By early Tuesday, the number of infected climbed to 98,984, meaning France wi…

Citing lack of masks and soap, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez fears Brooklyn federal jail is ‘powder keg of coronavirus infection’

Measures to combat a COVID-19 outbreak inside a federal jail in Brooklyn are woefully inadequate, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez wrote in a letter Monday, detailing screwups she fears will make the lockup “a potential powder keg of coronavirus infection.” Soap is in short supply at the Metropolitan Detention Center on the Sunset Park waterfront, according to the letter Velazquez sent to the Bureau of Prisons Monday. Yet correctional officers and other staff are prohibited from bringing alcohol-based hand sanitizer or their own face masks to work. Staff are rotated in and out of four housing units in quarantine without adequate protective gear, Velazquez wrote. Correctional officers who go home with COVID-19 symptoms are routinely ordered to return to work “in a couple days,” according to the letter. Meanwhile, the jail holding 1,700 inmates is one of the busiest in the federal system, with 150 or 200 inmates coming or going from the facility per we…

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo is making progress in his battle against coronavirus after a brutal week that included shivering so violently that he chipped a tooth. The newsman, brother of Gov. Cuomo, was on “day 11” Monday, marking the time since he first exhibited allergy-like symptoms, his wife, Cristina Cuomo, posted in an update on Instagram. “Many have asked how Chris is doing and what meds he’s taking. Here’s an update,” she said in a post that began with, “Every day is a gift.” “After one week of up and down symptoms — chills, body aches, total exhaustion, sleeplessness, and a fever that hit 103, he is on day 11 today, (day 1 being first day of allergy-like symptoms) — he seems slightly better, but still feels the…
